Yes, you really can learn to swim in just a few days!
Our students come to Los Angeles from all over the country to solve the mysteries of swimming and to conquer their fear of the unknown. For 30 years the Center's learn to swim workshops have been gently soothing the nervous hearts of thousands of apprehensive adults as the Center’s teachers gently guide them towards unprecedented levels of swimming competency.
Our students are typically college educated professional people between the ages of 30 and 60 with approximately 60% being women.
Typically, our students are people who have suffered a lifetime of anxiety and embarrassment whenever recreating with friends or family at the beach, pool or lake. However, after completing the Passive Swimming workshop they are now able to participate in an amazing variety of water activities and aquatic sports that our students never dreamed possible. But even more importantly, these same students are able to safely share the joy of swimming with family and friends whether in the backyard pool or while on an exotic vacation to a sunny tropical island in the South Pacific.
Hi, I’m Paul Lennon, thanks for visiting my web site. Many years ago in the 1960’s I was considered by many to be a gifted competitive swimmer. However, during those same years I suffered from what is today called “anxiety disorder”, which unfortunately caused my 12-year career as a competitive swimmer to be somewhat unfulfilled. But, out of this unique life failure came an unexpected gift. I became very interested in helping people who suffered water-related anxiety. It was the perfect marriage of my talent as a swimmer combined with my profound understanding and empathy for people who suffered from anxiety. Consequently, I developed a comprehensive learn to swim series of workshops to help eliminate the frustration and failure that adults too often experience when attempting to master the art and science of swimming.
My staff and I have dedicated our selves to creating the finest adult swimming program in the country, and the hundreds of media stories and hundreds of testimonial letters about the success of my students, I believe, says it all.
I am a regular guest on radio and television, and my adult swim center has been featured in numerous publications such as: Shape magazine, Forbes Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the Seattle Times and Self Magazine to mention but a few. My workshops have also been featured on television’s Good Morning America, the Discovery Channel and on ABC, NBC and CBS evening news. These are but only a few of the many dozens of inspirational stories produced by the media about the success of my students.
Because of the enormous amount of news coverage about my program one of the most common questions that people ask is “HOW DO WE DO IT?” professionals in the swimming industry often have a difficult time understanding how we can transform non-swimmers into relaxed deep-water swimmers in a single 3 or 4-day workshop. After all, it takes the average swim school a year or longer for their students to gain the same degree of competency in the water that our students have. However, until these people experience our philosophy and methodology themselves, it will continue to remain a mystery for them. Their reaction of amazement and disbelief at our student's success is not surprising, because after completing our program the majority of our students not only learn to swim but can swim a mile and tread water for an hour without becoming winded or tired using only the very simplest of skills. Our students exhibit such a profound level of relaxation and efficiency in the water that athletic ability becomes totally unnecessary. This immediately eliminates the hundreds of pool hours normally needed to build stamina, strength and coordination that are required in conventional learn-to-swim programs for a student to become a safe and competent deepwater swimmer. Our swimmers are calm and quite in the water and after completing a one-mile swim or a one-hour tread they have pulse rates of only 60 to 80 beats per minute. In other words our students are profoundly relaxed, comfortable and efficient when swimming and treading for prolonged periods of time over deep water.
From the start, workshop students will experience our powerful yet gentle methodology including exposure therapy and desensitization which is stealthfully integrated into all of our learn-to-swim programs. Students have little if any awareness of the innovative system that surrounds them while in the pool environment. This creates a non-invasive, caring atmosphere of comfort and safety, which significantly flattens the student’s learning curve eliminating brain pain. Our students are then introduced to the simple science of a human body immersed in the weightless environment of water. Through simple explanations of the physics of swimming, smart analogies and eloquent demonstrations the world of water becomes crystal clear and is no longer misunderstood by the novice student. The new student must now apply these remarkable yet simple concepts to the real world of water and swimming. And, what really amazes professionals in the swimming profession and new students the most is that just a few hours earlier these same students not only didn't know how to swim, but they were also afraid of the water!
I designed these learn-to-swim workshops to be an effective alternative to conventional swimming programs by clearly meeting the special needs of the aquaphobic student when conventional teaching techniques have failed… again and again. I believe even children and adults who aren’t afraid of the water should take this powerful yet gentle program. However, we have always dedicated ourselves, only to adults who are having difficulties learning to swim.
It has taken years of research and development that continues to this day to make my Passive Swimming program truly the simplest, gentlest and purist form of swimming there is anywhere. It is the heart and soul of what swimming is all about. Passive Swimming is what is absent in conventional learn to swim programs and it is the foundation of everything that is swimming.
My Passive Swimming program will gently alleviate your feelings of fear and failure by building extraordinary self-confidence and truly fine swimming skills in just a few hours of highly specialized instruction. You will be transformed into a competent deep-water swimmer through a process of gradual desensitization, warm-water therapy, patented teaching aids and comprehensive yet simple teaching methods. Problems with breath control, buoyancy, physical tiredness and mental anxiety will be eliminated. You will be at peace with the water for the very first time in your life and more importantly you will be deep water safe and totally self-sufficient while swimming.
After completing approximately 15 to 20 hours of my Passive Swimming program, you may join me in a tropical paradise where you can participate in one of my ocean adjustment programs. You will swim with dolphins in the ocean, hand feed friendly fish while snorkeling and take underwater photos of some of the most beautiful coral gardens in the world. We have been providing our students with vacation/workshops since 1979. During many of our vacation/workshops our students have experienced: scuba diving, water skiing, boogie boarding, snorkeling, river rafting, surfing as well as many other water related sports.
I also conduct workshops in Seattle, Hawaii, Mexico, Bora Bora (South Pacific), Grand Cayman Island (Caribbean) and a new program in Costa Rica (The Jewel of Central America
From 1981 through 1989, I conducted many 2-day workshops in cities all across America. Well, I will once again be offering 3-day and 4-day intensive workshops in: Seattle, Phoenix, New York, Chicago, Houston and many other cities as I continue to negotiate with the management of many different aquatic facilities that meet our very special swimming pool requirements.
I look forward to talking with you and especially working with you in the pool. I know you’ll find my Passive Swimming Program to be a rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
